RFCS-2026-Big Tickets-Coal

The grant supports research and innovation projects that advance the European Green Deal and Just Transition Mechanism goals in the coal sector. Projects are expected to quantify emission reductions and positive environmental effects, demonstrate positive health and safety impacts, outline a scalability plan with a viable business case, disseminate results, and contribute to regional skill development and job creation. Proposals must address at least one of the following areas: supporting just transition in the coal sector, improving health and safety, minimising environmental impacts of coal mines in transition, repurposing coal mines and infrastructure, materials and waste reuse, land monitoring and restoration, methane emission processing, or mine water management/treatment. Eligible activities include pilot or demonstration projects achieving TRL 7-8 and contributing to the revitalisation of former coal mining regions, with potential for reskilling and upskilling programmes.
